On February 14, a tragic incident unfolded in Mumbai when a section of a parapet from an elevated, under-construction metro bridge collapsed, striking both an auto rickshaw and a car on LBS Road in Mulund. This unfortunate event resulted in the death of one individual and left three others injured.
The deceased has been identified as Ramdhan Yadav. Among the injured, Rajkumar Indrajeet Yadav, aged 45, is in critical condition and has been admitted to an intensive care unit, while Mahendra Pratap Yadav, 52, and Deepa Ruhiya, 40, are reported to be stable. The immediate response to the incident involved quickly transferring the injured to a nearby hospital for medical care.
In light of the incident, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has initiated an inquiry to investigate the cause of the parapet collapse, assessing construction safety protocols and structural integrity. An official statement from the MMRDA indicated that the incident occurred around 12:15 PM near Pier P196 of the Metro Line construction work. The team is actively engaged in relief operations and ensuring the safety of the site in coordination with local authorities and disaster management teams.
Mumbai’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, expressed his condolences regarding the incident while confirming that a thorough investigation would be carried out. He assured that the medical expenses for the injured individuals would be handled by the MMRDA and the state government. The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of examining whether safety measures were properly implemented during construction and promised action against those found responsible.
Deputy Mayor of Mumbai, Sanjay Ghadi, also addressed the incident, confirming that four people were injured, one of whom lost their life. He noted that two individuals remain in critical care, highlighting the government’s commitment to holding those accountable if negligence is found. Eknath Shinde is set to oversee the inquiry into the event, ensuring legal action is taken against anyone responsible for the mishap.
This incident underscores ongoing concerns about safety and infrastructure integrity in Mumbai, a city renowned for its complex urban landscape and substantial construction activities.
