Afghanistan is still in contention for a spot in the Super Eight stage of the Twenty20 World Cup after a five-wicket victory against the UAE in Group D. Azmatullah Omarzai’s outstanding performance, both with bat and ball, played a critical role in this win, marking Afghanistan’s first success in the tournament.
The UAE, batting first, reached a total of 160-9, thanks to Sohaib Khan’s top score of 68. Omarzai excelled for Afghanistan, taking 4 wickets for just 15 runs and later scoring an unbeaten 40 off 21 balls to lead his team to victory with four balls remaining.
Afghanistan’s captain, Rashid Khan, expressed the importance of the win, stating, “Always important to have a win at the World Cup and let’s hope for the best in the rest of the competition.” He also mentioned that despite the team’s struggles, they would continue to play positively to honor their nation.
In the early overs, the match saw significant involvement from TV umpire Paul Reiffel, particularly after Rashid elected to field first. The opening moments included a contentious catch behind that went in favor of the batter, Aryansh Sharma, after several replays. Shortly thereafter, Sharma was given out, caught behind for a duck.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman contributed notably by dismissing UAE captain Muhammad Waseem lbw for 10 runs, a decision upheld after a review. In the fourth over, Sohaib was initially given lbw to Mujeeb as well, but benefitted from a successful review that showed the delivery would have missed the stumps. This allowed him to build a critical partnership with Alishan Sharafu, adding 84 runs to stabilize the innings.
Eventually, Omarzai ended Sohaib’s impressive innings, which featured six fours and four sixes. Despite losing their opener Gurbaz in the first over, Afghanistan found stability through Ibrahim Zadran’s 53 and Darwish Rasooli’s 33, keeping their hopes alive throughout the chase. Omarzai sealed the victory for his team with a four off Junaid Siddique.
