Michelle Yeoh Steers Clear of US Political Issues at Berlin Film Festival

Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh recently attended the Berlin International Film Festival, where she accepted the honorary Golden Bear award for lifetime achievement. During a press conference at the event, she chose not to engage with questions regarding US politics, emphasizing her lack of expertise in that area.

At the press conference held after receiving the prestigious award, Yeoh expressed her views on the political climate in the United States. She stated, “I don’t think I am in the position to really talk about the political situation in the US… it is best not to talk about something I don’t know about.” Instead, she encouraged a focus on the importance of cinema amidst the changing landscape of media consumption.

The discussion also touched on the topic of Asian representation in Hollywood. Yeoh highlighted the ongoing challenges within the industry, particularly recalling the reception of films like Crazy Rich Asians and Everything Everywhere All at Once. She shared insights on the skepticism faced by these projects initially, noting that they broke conventions by featuring all-Asian casts in genres that were traditionally underrepresented.

Reflecting on her journey, Yeoh remarked, “I won’t just go away. I will stay until the right changes are made.” Her words underscore the perseverance required for greater diversity and representation in the film industry.

During the festival, Yeoh received the Golden Bear from director Sean Baker, who praised her as a formidable presence in cinema. He described her as “a once-in-a-generation screen presence” that transforms the atmosphere of any film she appears in.

Yeoh’s portfolio includes notable films, such as Tomorrow Never Dies, Crazy Rich Asians, and her Academy Award-winning role in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Emphasizing the impact of her career, Sean Baker remarked on her unique ability to elevate the stakes of a scene.

In a moment of gratitude and emotion, Yeoh delivered a heartfelt acceptance speech, moved by the recognition of her achievements. Recently, she has also been seen in the musical film Wicked, continuing to leave a mark on the film industry.
