Priyadarshan addresses Rajpal Yadav’s prison sentence, calls it a ‘blunder’ due to education

Rajpal Yadav, a prominent actor in Bollywood, has recently found himself in legal trouble concerning a cheque-bounce case. After surrendering to authorities at Tihar Jail in Delhi, his bail hearing was postponed. In light of these developments, filmmaker Priyadarshan spoke out, revealing his efforts to secure a higher salary for Yadav in an upcoming project.

Priyadarshan, who has collaborated with Yadav on several films, including “Bhagam Bhaag” and “Chup Chup Ke,” shared insights about their relationship and Yadav’s current predicament. While working on post-production for his film “Bhooth Bangla,” he expressed concern for Yadav’s situation and advocated for increased compensation from the producers of their next project, stating that they aim to support the actor.

The filmmaker emphasized his long-standing friendship with Yadav, noting that he had recognized the actor’s talent since his debut in the film “Jungle” (2000). Priyadarshan mentioned, “I told the producers of my next to pay Rajpal more than what he charges because of his situation. We want to save him.” He underscored the importance of helping Yadav, who has faced difficulties due to financial mismanagement from his earlier ventures in film.

The legal issues surrounding Yadav are significant. He surrendered to Tihar Jail on February 5 after his request for more time to resolve the cheque-bounce cases was rejected by the Delhi High Court. The actor is facing liabilities amounting to nearly ₹9 crore. This situation traces back to a loan of ₹5 crore taken from Murali Projects Pvt Ltd in 2010, intended to fund his directorial debut, “Ata Pata Laapata,” which ultimately failed commercially and led to a series of financial disputes.

In 2018, Yadav was convicted of cheque dishonor under the Negotiable Instruments Act, receiving a six-month prison sentence—a ruling reaffirmed by a sessions court the following year. The total amount owed has increased substantially since then, culminating in nearly ₹9 crore due to accumulated penalties and interest.

Since the news of Yadav’s imprisonment became public, many in the film industry have rallied to his side. Celebrities such as Sonu Sood, Gurmeet Choudhary, Guru Randhawa, and Mika Singh have offered support, with some extending financial assistance to help him navigate these challenging circumstances.

The unfolding situation highlights the complexities of financial management in the film industry and the impact of such issues on artists. As Yadav navigates his legal battles, support from peers and colleagues in the industry may play a crucial role in his efforts to overcome these challenges.
