Hollywood’s Ongoing Misrepresentation of Indian Culture, Says Ramayana Producer

Filmmaker Namit Malhotra is embarking on an ambitious project, the two-part adaptation of the epic, Ramayana, which aims to introduce Indian culture to a global audience in a manner not previously seen in Hollywood. He expresses that this endeavor stems from his dissatisfaction with the lack of representation of Indian culture in Western cinema.

At a recent event hosted by ET Now, Malhotra explained the catalyst for creating Ramayana. He noted a significant absence of appreciation for Indian history and culture in Hollywood, despite the successful presence of Indian professionals in other fields. This frustration highlighted the need to portray India’s rich heritage authentically, motivating Malhotra to bring the story of Ramayana to life as a testament to India’s cultural legacy.

Reportedly, Ramayana is set to be the most expensive Indian film to date, with a staggering production budget of $500 million. Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios, in collaboration with Yash’s Monster Mind Creations and Atlas Entertainment led by Charles Roven, is backing the project, marking a significant milestone in the Indian film industry.

In discussing the film’s extensive scope, Malhotra emphasized that it matches the grandeur of major Hollywood productions. He stressed the commitment to achieving top-tier technical engagement and visual storytelling, insisting on the project’s significance as a high-caliber, independently financed venture from India.

The cast of Ramayana features notable talents, including Ranbir Kapoor in the role of Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash portraying Ravana. Additionally, Ravie Dubey plays Lakshmana, while the iconic Sunny Deol takes on the role of Lord Hanuman. The film’s musical score combines the talents of AR Rahman and Hans Zimmer, the latter making his debut in Indian cinema.

The first part of Ramayana is scheduled for release this year, just before Diwali, while the second part is anticipated to premiere ahead of Diwali in 2027. This project is not only a cinematic endeavor but also a landmark that seeks to highlight the depth and richness of Indian mythology on a global platform.
