The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships kicked off with excitement as women’s week commenced, drawing attention to two local favorites who advanced to the second round. This year’s WTA 1000 event showcased a vibrant atmosphere at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium, highlighting the competitive spirit of the players.
In a thrilling match, Alexandra Eala, the highest-ranked Filipino in WTA history, faced off against American Hailey Baptiste. At just 20 years old, Eala entered the tournament with great expectations, attracting a strong crowd from the Filipino community. Baptiste, ranked just one spot higher at No. 39, entered the match as a Lucky Loser after a setback in the qualifiers but quickly proved to be a challenging opponent.
Eala utilized the energy from the fervent home crowd, displaying her skills with impressive winners against Baptiste’s powerful game. After a tense start, Eala established control, breaking serve and sealing the first set with a 6-4 victory.
The second set took an unexpected turn when Baptiste, having initially held her serve, was forced to retire due to a left abdominal injury, handing Eala a place in the next round. The crowd reacted with surprise but soon cheered again as Eala expressed her concern for Baptiste’s health.
Eala shared her thoughts after the match, acknowledging the difficulty of progressing in such a manner and expressing well wishes for her opponent. She also relished the support from the stands, describing the experience of playing in front of such an enthusiastic crowd as instrumental to her success.
In another match earlier in the day, Leylah Fernandez from Canada clashed with Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova in a compelling three-set contest. The match lasted nearly three hours and showcased the resilience and skill of both players. After losing a tight first set, Fernandez regrouped to take the second, ultimately forcing a decisive third set.
In the final set, Fernandez initially built a commanding lead, but Samsonova fought back, momentarily shifting the momentum. However, Fernandez managed to regain her focus and secured her victory, eliminating the 13th seed from the tournament.
Post-match, Fernandez expressed her gratitude for the heightened crowd support compared to previous years, emphasizing the significance of the growing interest in women’s tennis. She acknowledged feeling a connection to the Dubai crowd, which helped reignite her passion for the sport.
The night concluded with a swift victory for the Czech Republic’s Sara Bejlek, who dispatched Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez in a tidy 75 minutes, showcasing her form on the court.
