Indian author Arundhati Roy has publicly criticized the organizers of the Berlin Film Festival and opted to withdraw from the event due to comments made by jury president Wim Wenders regarding the conflict in Gaza. Her decision follows Wenders’s assertion that cinema should avoid political involvement during a recent press conference.
Roy expressed her profound disappointment after hearing responses from Wenders and other jury members concerning the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and Israel. At the press conference, Wenders stated that filmmakers should not take political stances, a remark that Roy found “shocking and disgusting.”
Best known for her Booker Prize-winning novel, Roy was scheduled to attend the festival to present a restored version of her film “In Which Annie Gives It Those One,” which features a young Shah Rukh Khan. However, her withdrawal signifies her unwillingness to be associated with an event that dismisses the political implications of art.
In a statement to AFP, Roy indicated that the jury’s statements were “unconscionable” and weighed heavily on her decision. She highlighted her strong feelings regarding the situation in Gaza, referring to Israel’s actions as “genocide of the Palestinian people.”
The festival organizers acknowledged Roy’s choice, noting, “The Berlinale respects these decisions. We regret that we will not welcome them as their presence would have enriched the festival discourse.”
During the press conference, Wenders faced questions about Germany’s support for Israel and reiterated his viewpoint that politics should not intertwine with filmmaking. Fellow jury member Ewa Puszczynska added that it was ‘unfair’ to expect the jury to make a political judgment.
Despite the festival’s reputation for progressive programming, this year’s Berlinale has seen several prominent figures refraining from addressing significant political issues, including the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This conflict escalated following Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in considerable casualties. Reports indicate that the Israeli response has led to a staggering number of fatalities in Gaza.
As the situation continues to develop, the broader implications for art and politics remain a critical conversation in the cultural landscape.
