Former Pakistan cricketer Umar Gul has identified Hardik Pandya as a significant threat to Pakistan in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 match, scheduled for Sunday at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Gul also expressed optimism for Pakistan’s chances, predicting they may emerge victorious in this high-stakes encounter.
During a discussion on the Mr Cricket UAE podcast, Umar Gul emphasized the qualities that make Pandya a formidable opponent. He described him as calm and composed, highlighting that securing Pandya’s wicket will be crucial for Pakistan. Gul praised his powerful ball-striking and strategic shot selection, differentiating him from other players on the field.
The intensity of the India-Pakistan match was underscored by Gul, who acknowledged the substantial pressure that accompanies these clashes. While he deemed the contest evenly matched, he believed that Pakistan could exploit the conditions at R Premadasa to their advantage. “These matches carry truckloads of pressure,” he noted, asserting that Pakistan could edge out India, given the local playing conditions.
Gul also raised concerns about India’s middle-order performance, suggesting it has not met expectations in recent matches. He stressed the importance of addressing these issues, especially with tougher opponents ahead. The former cricketer pointed out that if Abhishek Sharma achieves full fitness, he would seamlessly replace Sanju Samson in the Indian lineup, bringing valuable experience as a top T20 player.
In addition to batting, Gul highlighted Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav’s impressive track record against Pakistan. He suggested that the conditions in Colombo could lead India to select Kuldeep in favor of a seamer, potentially resting Arshdeep Singh to ensure batting depth for the match.
Addressing the ongoing debate between Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman, Gul acknowledged that while Babar is undoubtedly Pakistan’s best player, Fakhar’s explosive batting style may make him a better fit for the No. 4 position. Nevertheless, he mentioned that Babar’s recent performance against the USA has bolstered his confidence, reaffirming his talent.
Gul advocated for the management to continue supporting Usman Khan, the Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter who has faced challenges at the World Cup, including two consecutive ducks. He argued that maintaining consistency in the lineup will be more beneficial than making unnecessary changes.
Historically, India and Pakistan have met eight times in T20 World Cup matches, with India holding a dominant 7-1 record. Both teams have played two matches in the tournament, each securing two victories. India heads into the match after triumphs over the USA and Namibia, while Pakistan has claimed wins against the Netherlands and the USA.
Currently, India leads Group A with four points and a Net Run Rate (NRR) of +3.050, while Pakistan follows closely in second place, also with four points, but an NRR of +0.932. The upcoming clash promises to be a thrilling encounter as both teams vie for supremacy in this high-pressure tournament.
