Former French Open finalist Karolina Muchova marked a significant milestone in her career by winning the Qatar Open, breaking a six-year trophy drought. She triumphed over Canadian Victoria Mboko with a score of 6-4, 7-5, securing her first WTA 1000 title.
Muchova, hailing from the Czech Republic, has faced considerable challenges due to injuries, including a 10-month hiatus following a wrist injury in 2023. Prior to this victory, her last title on the WTA tour was at the Korea Open in September 2019.
With a composed performance, the 29-year-old minimized errors and effectively changed the rhythm of the game against Mboko. The match concluded in an hour and 34 minutes, with Muchova displaying solid form.
Reflecting on her win, Muchova expressed her joy, stating, “It’s been a while since I won a tournament. It’s just nice to get that feeling again, and to be reminded of that victory feeling.”
On the other side of the net, 19-year-old Mboko made a strong impression by advancing to the final after defeating notable players such as fifth seed Mirra Andreeva and second seed Elena Rybakina. Despite the loss, she shared her optimism, saying, “It was amazing… it’s not the outcome I wanted but I think there’s so many positives to take away.”
This victory not only revitalizes Muchova’s career but also positions Mboko as a rising star in the tennis world, likely to enter the top-10 rankings.
