Recent reports have circulated about the future of Yash Raj Films’ spy franchise, particularly the upcoming film “Alpha,” directed by Shiv Rawail. Initially, there were speculations that the film would opt for a direct release on OTT platforms due to the mixed reviews of another installment, “War 2.” However, sources indicate that while a significant offer was made, YRF has decided to pursue a theatrical release instead.
According to Variety India, a spokesperson for YRF confirmed they turned down a ₹215 crore deal with Netflix for the direct digital release of “Alpha.” The studio emphasized its commitment to delivering cinematic experiences and did not wish to diminish the film’s potential by bypassing theaters. The spokesperson stated that claims regarding the film debuting directly on streaming platforms are unfounded, describing “Alpha” as a tentpole production for YRF.
The studio aims to create something unique with “Alpha,” highlighting Alia Bhatt as one of the finest actors in the country and praising co-star Sharvari as a talented young performer. YRF remains optimistic, believing that audiences will embrace the film as they do with other action-centric releases. They are confident that “Alpha” will entertain viewers, reinforcing its importance in their cinematic lineup.
Originally slated for a December 25 release last year, “Alpha’s” launch was pushed back to April 17 of this year due to prolonged visual effects timelines. Yet, with the recent failure of “War 2,” there are whispers that the delay may have been a strategic move to prevent competition against Salman Khan’s “Battle of Galwan,” which is also anticipated soon.
In a recent award presentation at BAFTA 2026, Alia Bhatt discussed her contrasting upcoming projects, noting her excitement about “Alpha” and the romance-driven “Love & War” directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. She expressed her eagerness to see how audiences respond to both films once released, acknowledging the hard work and dedication that went into their production.
As it stands, a new release date for “Alpha” has not yet been disclosed, leaving fans and industry stakeholders eager for updates on this significant addition to the YRF spy universe.
