Bollywood veteran Govind Namdev has had a prolific career spanning over 30 years, featuring in numerous successful films such as “Shola Aur Shabnam,” “Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani,” “Wanted,” and “OMG! Oh My God!” In a recent conversation with The Lallantop, he addressed important issues related to inequality on film sets, highlighting disparities in treatment among actors.
Namdev noted that despite his seniority in the industry, stars rarely seek his advice. He remarked that many leading actors feel that asking for guidance might diminish their status. According to him, the prevailing mindset in Bollywood is that consulting another actor implies weakness or lack of knowledge, which prevents stars from reaching out to those they view as “smaller” actors.
Addressing the hierarchy on film sets, Namdev explained that the industry operates with a clear distinction between major and minor stars, affecting their salaries and overall treatment. He pointed out that those earning more often enjoy better accommodations, including larger vanity vans. Moreover, he mentioned a food hierarchy that exists on sets, where stars are provided different meals compared to supporting actors.
Despite this prevailing culture of inequality, Govind highlighted instances where some prominent stars strive to foster fairness. He recounted how during the shooting of “OMG! Oh My God!”, Akshay Kumar and the film’s director took the initiative to ensure that all cast members were provided with the same food and drink, promoting a sense of equality on set.
In addition to his insights on industry dynamics, Govind Namdev has an extensive filmography. He made his debut in Bollywood with “Shola Aur Shabnam” in 1992 and has since portrayed various characters, particularly villains, in films like “Dum Maaro Dum,” “Bandit Queen,” “Virasat,” “Satya,” “Kachche Dhaage,” “Raju Chacha,” and “Johnny Gaddaar.”
Namdev was recently seen in “Hari Hara Veera Mallu,” a Telugu historical action-adventure film directed by A. M. Jyothi Krishna. The movie features prominent actors Pawan Kalyan, Nidhhi Agerwal, and Bobby Deol in significant roles, along with Sathyaraj, Eswari Rao, Sunil, Nassar, and Raghu Babu in supporting roles. Unfortunately, the film did not perform well at the box office, marking a setback in his recent work.
