John Davidson, a Tourette’s syndrome sufferer whose life inspired a BAFTA-winning film, expressed deep regret after inadvertently shouting a racial slur during the recent awards ceremony. He attributed the outburst to an involuntary tic associated with his condition.
The incident occurred while actors Delroy Lindo and Michael B. Jordan were presenting an award for special visual effects. Davidson’s utterance of the N-word drew significant attention and led to him stating that he was “deeply mortified.” In his statement to the press, he emphasized that he has never intended to cause harm or convey a particular meaning through his tics.
In light of the distress caused by his tics during the ceremony, Davidson chose to leave the audience. He reiterated his commitment to supporting and empowering the Tourette’s community, emphasizing the importance of empathy and understanding.
At the awards, British actor Robert Aramayo won the best actor prize for his portrayal of Davidson. The film, titled “I Swear,” reflects Davidson’s life experience in a small Scottish town dealing with Tourette’s.
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) issued an apology for the use of “very offensive language” during the event. The organization underscored that Tourette’s syndrome leads to involuntary verbal tics that are beyond the individual’s control. They acknowledged the impact of the incident on Lindo and Jordan and expressed regret for any pain it may have caused.
The ceremony’s host, actor Alan Cumming, also apologized for the offensive language heard during the broadcast. The BBC, which aired the ceremony on a two-hour delay, admitted it had failed to edit out the racial slur before airing and promised to remove it from the on-demand version available on BBC iPlayer.
A spokesperson for Tourettes Action commented on the situation, acknowledging the distress caused by racial slurs and reinforcing that tics are involuntary and do not reflect a person’s character or beliefs. They expressed pride in Davidson’s accomplishments and highlighted the importance of public understanding regarding Tourette’s syndrome.
The incident has sparked discussions about the challenges faced by individuals with Tourette’s and the need for awareness surrounding the condition. Davidson’s experience serves as a reminder of the complexities of involuntary movements and speech, as well as the social implications they can carry.
