Phil Collen of Def Leppard Shares Band’s Heartfelt Bond with India

Def Leppard is set to make its long-awaited debut in India, with the tour kicking off on March 25. For many fans, the band embodies the polished cinema of 1980s arena rock, but guitarist Phil Collen reveals a deeper, more soulful connection to the country that dates back to his experiences in the 1990s.

In a recent discussion, Collen shared that one of their songs, “Turn to Dust,” touches on the lives of Dalits. He recounted how witnessing the treatment of lower-caste individuals during his travels in India left a significant impression on him, leading to the creation of this track.

The song is notable for its raw, organic sound, differing from Def Leppard’s earlier work. Released in 1996 on the album “Slang,” “Turn to Dust” evokes the atmosphere of Indian bazaars, offering a psychedelic experience unlike typical rock anthems. Collen described how this inspiration stemmed from his encounters in these bustling markets.

During one visit to a record store in an Indian bazaar, Collen encountered the haunting sound of the Sarangi, an instrument he later decided to sample for the song. This moment was pivotal, reflecting a blend of cultural influences that shaped the band’s music. The Sarangi gained popularity in the West partly due to the efforts of Pandit Ram Narayan, who was featured in Collen’s discovery.

As the band prepares for their concerts in Shillong, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, Collen recognizes the significance of this event for Indian rock fans, many of whom have been anticipating their arrival for nearly two decades. The missed opportunity in 2008 still resonates with him, but he is optimistic about the upcoming performances, promising a fresh experience for audiences.

Def Leppard plans to deliver a high-energy show, drawing from their recent Las Vegas residency. Collen highlighted the evolution of concert experiences, asserting that to engage modern audiences, artists must embrace innovative technologies and immersive stagecraft. He also expressed excitement about introducing his bandmates to India, sharing his own aspirations to visit the Kailasa Temple at Ellora during their trip.

Throughout the conversation, Collen maintained a balance between the band’s escapist rock persona and an awareness of global issues. He reflected on the darker aspects of human history while emphasizing the importance of music as a refuge from societal turmoil.

Looking ahead, Collen mentioned a potential new album slated for late 2026, noting the possibility of discovering new influences during their time in India. He appreciates various aspects of Indian culture, especially the country’s traditional music and vibrant cuisine, suggesting that these experiences might inspire their future sound.

As fans eagerly await Def Leppard’s performances, the band looks to create lasting memories that blend music, culture, and a deep connection to India.
