Pakistan’s hopes of advancing in the Twenty20 World Cup came to an abrupt end despite a close five-run victory over Sri Lanka in a Super Eights match held in Pallekele. The outcome meant that Pakistan’s campaign faced significant hurdles, primarily due to an insufficient net run rate.
To remain in contention for a semi-final spot, Pakistan needed a convincing win against Sri Lanka, as they were vying against New Zealand for a place in the next round along with group leaders England. In a display of exceptional batting, Pakistan set a formidable score of 212-8, thanks to a remarkable partnership between Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman, who put together a T20 World Cup record opening stand of 176 runs.
Despite Pakistan’s strong total, their chances hung in the balance, as they needed to limit Sri Lanka to 147 runs or fewer to qualify. However, Sri Lanka put up an impressive fight, finishing their innings at 207-6, with Pavan Rathnayake contributing 58 runs and captain Dasun Shanaka scoring an explosive 76 not out off just 31 balls.
As a result of this match, New Zealand secured a place in the T20 World Cup semi-finals following Sri Lanka’s near-upset against Pakistan.
