IPL 2026 Expected to Take Place Between March 28 and May 31

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season is set to commence on March 28, a slight alteration from the previously announced date of March 26. This change has been confirmed by ESPNcricinfo, signaling an adjustment in the tournament’s schedule.

In December 2025, the IPL administration informed franchises of the intended start date. However, further developments prompted the IPL to shift the schedule, with the grand finale now scheduled for May 31. This decision comes amid the pending announcement of assembly elections in Assam, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu, which has implications for the tournament’s plans.

The IPL Governing Council is expected to convene next week to finalize the 2026 season’s itinerary. The uncertainty surrounding the election dates has contributed to the delay in confirming the full schedule. Notably, Kolkata and Chennai serve as home grounds for the Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings, respectively, while Guwahati will host matches for the Rajasthan Royals.

In addition, the Governing Council will discuss the location of the season opener, which is set to showcase the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Following a tragic incident during RCB’s victory celebrations last June, discussions are ongoing about the venue for the team’s home games. This incident, which led to the loss of 11 lives at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, has raised concerns regarding safety and crowd management.

RCB is currently exploring alternative venues for its home matches, with options including Navi Mumbai, Raipur, and Pune under consideration. The final decision regarding the venue will be critical not only for RCB but also for the smooth conduct of IPL matches in 2026. As the season approaches, teams and fans alike remain eager for official updates regarding fixtures and locations.
