The recent postponement of Yash’s much-anticipated film, “Toxic,” has led to significant changes in the schedule of other major releases. Originally set for a March 19 debut, it has now been rescheduled for June 4 due to concerns about the impact of the Iran-Israel conflict on potential audiences in the Middle East. This delay also means that “Dhurandhar 2,” starring Ranveer Singh, will now be the sole big release on the original date.
Exhibitors and industry experts have welcomed this change, recognizing that simultaneous big releases can dilute box office earnings and complicate scheduling for theaters. With just one major film set for March 19, they anticipate a more favorable environment for ticket sales.
With “Toxic” now releasing later, “Dhurandhar: The Revenge,” directed by Aditya Dhar, will dominate the box office on March 19. Though it faces some competition from the regional film “Ustaad Bhagat Singh,” the overall impact on exhibitors is expected to be minimal. Industry expert Girish Wankhede remarked that the current geopolitical situation has inadvertently benefited Indian cinema, allowing for solo releases that avoid the complications of competing films.
Logistical concerns are always a factor in theatrical releases, and exhibitors have expressed relief at the opportunity to show only one major film at a time. Kamal Gianchandani, CEO of PVR INOX Pictures, emphasized that while handling dual releases is manageable, the decision to delay “Toxic” accommodates the current market conditions and benefits both films.
“Dhurandhar,” which premiered on December 5 and grossed approximately ₹1300 crore at the box office, laid a favorable foundation for its sequel. The absence of significant competition now positions “Dhurandhar 2” for a successful run, especially with plans for a multilingual release in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada.
Distributors predict that without competition, “Dhurandhar 2” could significantly boost its opening weekend earnings, potentially exceeding ₹100 crore globally. Trade insiders also suggest that both films stand to benefit by capturing a higher share of the available screens, as they will no longer be splitting audiences across thousands of theaters throughout India. This collective opportunity for a focused box office approach is expected to enhance the chances of both films achieving blockbuster status.
