Chelsea’s head coach, Liam Rosenior, expressed his frustration with referee Paul Tierney following the team’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle United on Saturday. He criticized the official for concentrating more on a pre-match huddle rather than addressing a key penalty decision during the game.
The huddle, where Chelsea players formed a circle at the center of the pitch prior to kick-off, has been a point of contention among rival teams. Newcastle players have previously voiced their displeasure at this practice, feeling it infringes on their space. In this instance, Rosenior noted that the huddle took place around the referee, who maintained his stance despite the situation.
When questioned about the pre-match gathering, Rosenior emphasized that the team’s unity should not be deemed disrespectful. He pointed out that referee Tierney had previously discussed the huddles with one of his staff, insinuating that the focus on it detracted from more pressing matters on the pitch.
Rosenior’s main contention revolved around a missed penalty decision, specifically when Chelsea’s Cole Palmer was brought down in the Newcastle area during the second half in a challenge with Nick Woltemade. The coach lamented that if the referee had devoted his attention to the game, a penalty could have been awarded.
Moreover, Rosenior stressed the importance of prioritizing significant game elements. He remarked, “My team showing unity is not as important as getting the decisions right on the pitch.” He indicated that he would seek clarification from the refereeing body regarding the incident.
The defeat against Newcastle constitutes a setback for Chelsea in their quest for Champions League qualification next season. However, Rosenior maintained that there are still eight matches remaining in the Premier League and plenty of opportunities for the team’s fortunes to change.
