The Delhi High Court recently dismissed a petition from actress Celina Jaitly, who sought assistance in reaching her brother, Vikrant Jaitly, currently detained in the United Arab Emirates. The court ruled that the petition could not proceed, as Vikrant expressed a desire not to communicate with his sister and preferred to address his legal situation through his wife.
During the court hearing on March 16, Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav noted that Vikrant had been granted consular access but declined any legal help, including a pro bono offer from a law firm. This decision was relayed to the court, which highlighted Vikrant’s clear stance against external representation.
Celina Jaitly had petitioned for support in managing her brother’s legal fees and for direct communication with him. However, Vikrant’s refusal to engage in discussions with her led to the court advising authorities to maintain communication with him while offering necessary assistance as permitted by law.
Additionally, Vikrant’s wife requested the details of the case remain confidential. The court acknowledged that state officials are maintaining consultations with Vikrant as they navigate the legal proceedings. The matter was concluded with the court stating that there was no basis to keep Celina’s petition alive.
Vikrant Jaitly, a retired Indian Army Major, has been in detention since September 6, 2024, related to unspecified national security concerns. Despite his detention, the specific allegations against him have not been publicly clarified. Prior to this, he had been residing in the UAE since 2016, working for the MATITI Group, a consultancy and trading company. Celina has expressed continuous worry over the lack of clear legal counsel and communication regarding her brother’s situation.
