Unpacking the Shocking Finale of ‘Peaky Blinders: Duke’s Betrayal’

The Oscars have wrapped up for this year, concluding the awards season with “One Battle After Another” taking home both Best Picture and Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson. After multiple nominations in past years, Anderson finally secured his first Oscar, but he remains behind Diane Warren, who holds an unprecedented 17 nominations without a win.

Diane Warren, a prolific American songwriter, received her first Oscar nomination in 1987 for “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” from the film “Mannequin.” Most recently, she was nominated for “Dear Me,” performed by Kesha and featured in the documentary “Diane Warren: Relentless.” Unfortunately, she lost this year to the K-Pop group Ejae, Ido, and Teddy Park for their song “Golden.” This nomination marks her ninth consecutive nod in the Best Original Song category, bringing her total to 17.

Despite her ongoing streak of losses, Warren remains optimistic. She expressed her resolve on Facebook, stating, “Well at least I’m consistent! And I set a new record tonight!! But U know me, I will be back if you’ll have me!!!” Although she has yet to win a competitive Oscar, she was honored with an honorary Academy Award during the 2022 Governors Awards.

Warren has previously shared her perspective on the significance of winning. In an interview with the Times, she emphasized that it’s not about validation but rather the joy of creating music. She acknowledged her ongoing record of nominations, mentioning that she is tied with her friend Greg Russell, both of whom have lost 16 times. Yet, she remains focused on her craft, stating that the real validation comes from the love her songs receive rather than accolades.

In the realm of Oscar nominations without wins, Warren isn’t alone. Glenn Close holds eight nominations without a victory, while Amy Adams has garnered six, and Bradley Cooper has received twelve across various categories, all without securing a win.

Throughout her career, Diane Warren has contributed significantly to the music industry, writing nine number-one hits and 33 songs that reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her collaborations with iconic artists like Cher, Celine Dion, and Aerosmith have yielded some of their most memorable tracks. As she looks ahead to future nominations, fans and industry peers alike are eager to see how her story unfolds.
