Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, marked the 30th edition of the Dubai World Cup at the Meydan Racecourse. This prestigious event is renowned for its global significance in the equestrian world.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, joined the festivities, highlighting the importance of this tournament in reinforcing Dubai’s status as a hub for international horse racing. Sheikh Mohammed noted that over the past three decades, the Dubai World Cup has transformed from a local race into a global phenomenon, attracting elite competitors from around the world.
During his remarks, Sheikh Mohammed emphasized Dubai’s ambitions to host world-class events, showcasing the city’s commitment to excellence and innovation. The growth of the Dubai World Cup is seen as a reflection of the city’s vision, which successfully combines bold ideas with effective planning.
He praised the competitors participating in this year’s edition, acknowledging that their efforts amid current global challenges demonstrate Dubai’s capability to organize outstanding events. Sheikh Mohammed reiterated Dubai’s open stance to the world, aiming to foster connections and facilitate progress across various sectors.
The highlight of the event was the main Group 1 race, where Sheikh Hamdan presented the trophy to the winner, Magnitude, ridden by jockey Jose Ortiz and trained by Steve Asmussen. This thrilling race spanned 2,000 meters on dirt and offered a substantial purse of $12 million. Remarkably, it featured nine of the world’s leading thoroughbreds.
This year’s Dubai World Cup showcased a remarkable assortment of elite horses and jockeys from 17 different countries, with a total of 101 horses competing across nine races for a combined prize fund of $30.5 million. The event brought together top horse owners, breeders, and racing enthusiasts, further solidifying its reputation as a premier racing event.
Notable attendees included Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, among other dignitaries and industry leaders. The inaugural Dubai World Cup took place in 1996 at the Nad Al Sheba Racecourse, initiated as part of Sheikh Mohammed’s vision to establish Dubai as a key international sports destination.
