Aamir Khan is set to release his much-anticipated film “Sitaare Zameen Par” on OTT, revealing that this was always part of the plan. He emphasized that he preferred the streaming debut to occur not immediately after its theatrical run, ensuring a transition period before it becomes available online.
The film premiered in theaters across India in June 2025, where it garnered an impressive box office collection of over ₹250 crore. Praised for its touching narrative and performances, “Sitaare Zameen Par” will begin streaming on SonyLIV starting April 3. Aamir expressed his eagerness for audiences who missed it in theaters to enjoy the film from their homes.
In addition to the film, SonyLIV will also host “Sitaaron Ke Sitaare,” a documentary focused on the real-life parents of the neurodivergent actors featured in the movie. Aamir described this documentary as a celebration of the true “superstars,” highlighting the dedication of the parents who have supported these individuals throughout their journeys. He made these comments on the red carpet during the inaugural International Film Festival Delhi (IFFD).
Earlier in July 2025, Aamir pursued a unique approach by releasing “Sitaare Zameen Par” directly on his YouTube channel, Aamir Khan Talkies, rather than opting for traditional OTT platforms. This release followed the film’s theatrical debut and utilized a pay-per-view model, allowing viewers to access it for around ₹100 per view. Aamir’s decision aimed to enhance cinema’s accessibility while experimenting with a new distribution model, considering it akin to establishing a private cinema chain in viewers’ homes.
He received numerous offers from OTT platforms but preferred earning directly from his audience rather than through large deals. This approach reflects his desire for continued connection with fans and a focus on individual viewer engagement.
“Sitaare Zameen Par,” directed by R S Prasanna, serves as a spiritual successor to Aamir’s critically acclaimed 2007 film “Taare Zameen Par.” In this narrative, Aamir stars as Gulshan Arora, who finds himself on an unexpected path after being fired from his position as an assistant coach for a prominent basketball team following a drunk-driving incident that leads him to court.
Faced with the choice between jail time or completing 90 days of community service, Gulshan is tasked with coaching a team of neurodivergent players as they prepare for a basketball tournament. The film features a talented ensemble cast, including Genelia Deshmukh, Ashish Pendse, Aroush Datta, Aayush Bhansali, Rishi Shahani, Gopikrishnan K Varma, Rishabh Jain, Vedant Sharma, Simran Mangeshkar, Samvit Desai, and Naman Misra.
With a compelling storyline and a strong message, “Sitaare Zameen Par” promises to captivate audiences both on screen and online when it streams on SonyLIV.
