Mystery Surrounds Arrest of Stephen Bowen Following Wife’s Tragic Death

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Nancy Metayer Bowen, the vice mayor of Coral Springs, Florida, was found dead in her home on April 1, 2026. Her body was discovered shortly after 10 a.m., and early investigations suggest that her death is linked to an incident of domestic violence. The focus has turned to her husband, Stephen Bowen, who is considered a suspect in this tragic case.

Stephen Bowen was arrested by police following the discovery of Nancy’s body. Authorities reported that she appeared to have been shot, and her husband fled to Plantation, Florida, where he was apprehended without incident. He is currently being held at the Broward County Jail as the investigation unfolds.

The death of Nancy Bowen is particularly poignant for her family, as it comes just three months after the passing of her brother, Donovan Joshua Leigh Metayer. Donovan, a survivor of the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, tragically took his own life in December 2025.

Stephen Bowen is a certified radiologic technologist and has previously served as the Chief Operating Officer for Men of St. Luke Inc. At 40 years old, he has a professional background in the nonprofit sector and holds active licensing in his field.

Nancy Metayer Bowen made history as the first Black and Haitian-American woman to serve on the Coral Springs City Commission. An alumna of Florida A&M University, she was initially elected in 2020 and re-elected in 2024. Her professional background includes work as an environmental scientist, along with a previous role on the Broward County Soil and Water Conservation District.

In her commitment to public service, Nancy was appointed to the Florida League of Cities’ Federal Action Strike Team during 2025-2026. She served a second one-year term as vice mayor, demonstrating her dedication to community improvement and environmental conservation.

According to Police Chief Brad Mock, authorities conducted a wellness check at Nancy’s home after a friend expressed concern over her well-being. Upon their arrival, officers discovered her deceased inside the residence. While the specific cause of death has not yet been confirmed, authorities have categorized the incident as one involving domestic violence.

The family of Nancy Bowen released a heartfelt statement following her passing. They highlighted her integrity, compassion, and commitment to the community throughout her years in public office. In their tribute, they reflected on her role as a leader and advocate, emphasizing her impact on the lives of those she served.

As the community mourns the untimely loss of Nancy Metayer Bowen, her legacy will undoubtedly endure through the many lives she touched and the policies she championed during her tenure in office. May she rest in peace.
