Barcelona’s manager Hansi Flick expressed his frustration following a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. The match featured contentious officiating decisions, particularly regarding a second-half penalty appeal and the red card issued to Pau Cubarsi just before halftime.
In the 53rd minute, Barcelona’s players raised their hands for a penalty after a situation involving goalkeeper Juan Musso and defender Marc Pubill. Musso appeared to restart play from a goal kick, after which Pubill handled the ball inside the six-yard box. Referee Istvan Kovacs allowed play to continue without consulting VAR, leading to heated protests from the Barcelona bench. “I don’t know why VAR hasn’t been used. The referee … I think he’s brilliant. We all make mistakes, but what’s the point of VAR? It should have been a penalty, a second yellow and a red card,” Flick stated in a post-match interview.
In contrast, Atletico Madrid’s coach Diego Simeone offered a different perspective on the incident. He emphasized that the referee made a judgment based on the play’s circumstances, suggesting that Pubill had received a pass from his teammate. “It’s a matter of common sense,” Simeone commented, defending the officiating decision.
Barcelona’s difficulties were exacerbated in the 44th minute when Cubarsi was sent off for bringing down Giuliano Simeone as the last defender. Julian Alvarez converted the resulting free kick just before the halftime whistle, giving Atletico a 1-0 lead. Alexander Sorloth then secured the win for Atletico with a goal in the second half.
Despite this victory, Simeone acknowledged that there is still room for improvement in his team. “We have things to improve and learn from… we’re happy for the win but there’s a long way to go,” said Antoine Griezmann, highlighting their cautious optimism. He noted that they are still far from the semifinals, emphasizing the need to remain grounded despite their success.
For Barcelona, who reached the semifinals last season, the upcoming second leg in Madrid presents a daunting challenge if they hope to advance and lift the trophy they last secured in 2015. Defender Ronald Araujo expressed confidence in his team’s abilities: “It will be tough there but if anyone can do it, it’s us.” The outcome of the return match will be crucial for both teams as they seek to progress further in the tournament.
