Imtiaz Ali’s upcoming film “Main Vaapas Aaunga” revisits the poignant history of the Partition of India through personal and intimate narratives. The film draws inspiration from emotional stories and memories that shaped the lives of those affected by this monumental event.
Ali expressed that he hesitated to create a film on Partition unless he could provide a unique perspective. His collaboration with familiar talents such as Diljit Dosanjh, noted for his role in “Amar Singh Chamkila,” and long-time associates A R Rahman and lyricist Irshad Kamil adds depth to this project. The film is set in 1947 but is narrated through the eyes of the contemporary youth, reflecting personal journeys amidst the larger national narrative.
One striking aspect is how memories of youth and early romance resonate even decades later. Ali emphasized that the lingering memories of love and tenderness continue to be a focal point when revisiting 1947. He remarked on the vast significance of migration as a central theme of our time, particularly highlighting the impact of Partition on the Indian subcontinent.
The filmmaker’s interest in personal Partition stories grew from his interactions with individuals who experienced the displacement directly. He recounted a poignant encounter with an elderly woman nearing death, whose sole focus was on a beloved doll she once left behind. These personal tales became central to understanding the human aspect of a historical tragedy.
“Main Vaapas Aaunga” stars Vedang Raina and Sharvari as young lovers, with the seasoned actor Naseeruddin Shah portraying Dosanjh’s grandfather, who reminisces about his lost love. The film will also showcase a song, “Kya Kamaal Hai,” composed by Rahman, marking a departure from the biopic format of “Chamkila,” where Dosanjh only provided the voice for the late singer.
Ali’s previous collaborations with stars like Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone bring a wealth of experience. His choice of Dosanjh for this film speaks to the actor’s unique ability to resonate with the character’s essence, which Ali found essential for the role.
Naseeruddin Shah’s involvement came after his favorable impression of “Chamkila.” Ali expressed excitement about casting Shah as a Sikh, highlighting the actor’s versatility. The younger cast, Raina and Sharvari, have brought energy and enthusiasm, leading Ali to engage with them actively throughout the filmmaking process.
Produced by Sameer Nair and Deepak Segal of Applause Entertainment, along with Mohit Choudhary and Shibasish Sarkar of Window Seat Films, “Main Vaapas Aaunga” is set for theatrical release on June 12. Ali aims to deliver a film that surprises audiences with its fresh storytelling while meeting their desire for high-quality cinema.
