Concerns regarding long working hours and inadequate facilities on film sets have intensified, with actors addressing the pressing issues faced by both performers and crew members. Recently, the cast of Netflix’s dramedy “Toaster,” including Rajkummar Rao and Sanya Malhotra, shed light on the scarcity of basic amenities in their work environment.
Archana Puran Singh discussed her experiences with extended work hours in an interview with News18. She described how filming schedules frequently exceed 12 hours and the toll this takes on crew members engaged in physically demanding tasks under challenging conditions. Singh emphasized the need for consideration regarding breaks, particularly for crew members who perform strenuous duties.
Singh criticized the prevalent practice of expecting workers to forgo meal breaks. “This is a kind of kanjoosi (stinginess) only,” she stated. She highlighted the need for essential breaks, especially for those exposed to harsh conditions, like light operators who endure long hours without adequate meal provisions.
The issue of restrictive meal provisions among certain production houses was also raised by Singh, who noted that crew members often refer to these companies based on how meager their meal offerings are. This highlights a deeper, systemic issue within the industry that requires urgent attention.
In a similar vein, Sanya Malhotra observed that some production houses neglect even the most basic breaks, including lunch, despite demanding schedules. This lack of attention to fundamental needs illustrates how crew welfare can be overlooked in the rush to complete projects.
Rajkummar Rao echoed these sentiments, questioning the absence of structured breaks. He argued that production schedules could be adjusted to incorporate timely meals, underscoring the importance of crew well-being over merely pushing through extensive hours.
Abhishek Banerjee also contributed to the discussion, suggesting that seemingly minor decisions regarding breaks and meal provisions reflect a broader mentality within the industry. He pointed out that cost-cutting measures can significantly impact the comfort and care provided to those on set.
The conversation surrounding overworking in the film industry gained further traction last year when Deepika Padukone stepped back from projects after her demand for an eight-hour workday was unmet. Padukone has previously highlighted the normalization of excessive working hours in the industry, advocating for healthier and more sustainable working conditions. This ongoing dialogue among actors illustrates a growing awareness of the need for reform within the film industry, aiming to enhance working conditions for all involved.
