Dozens of Chinese-made humanoid robots showcased their impressive athletic abilities during a half-marathon in Beijing. This year’s race marked a significant improvement from the inaugural edition, which saw many robots struggle to even begin their run.
In the previous year, technical difficulties left most robots unable to finish the race. However, the current event featured over 100 robots, a substantial increase from the 20 participants last year. The enhanced performance was evident, with several robots competing closely with professional human athletes.
The champion robot achieved a time of 50 minutes and 26 seconds, significantly faster than its robotic competitors. Notably, this time surpassed the previous world record set by human runner Jacob Kiplimo, although the robot required assistance just before crossing the finish line due to a collision with a railing.
Running on parallel tracks allowed the robots and humans to compete simultaneously without incident. The contrast in performance was striking, emphasizing advancements in robotic technology and their potential future applications. As China aims to become a leader in the humanoid robot industry, such events highlight the machines’ evolving capabilities.
Efforts to develop humanoid robots in China are supported by various policies, including subsidies and infrastructure projects, designed to benefit local businesses. Furthermore, the push for innovation in this field was showcased in the country’s premiere television program during the annual CCTV Spring Festival gala. Here, a demonstration featured Unitree humanoid robots executing complex martial arts routines alongside human performers.
As the technology continues to advance, it suggests a future where humanoid robots could play roles in various domains, from labor-intensive jobs to military applications.
