Masoom Sharma Called by Haryana Women’s Commission Amid Dehradun Event Controversy

The Haryana State Commission for Women has summoned Haryanvi folk singer Masoom Sharma following an incident at a college event in Dehradun earlier this month. Reports from the news agency ANI reveal that the summons were issued due to allegations of verbal abuse during the performance, which took place on April 10.

In light of the controversy, Sharma has addressed the situation, explaining that he and his family have been subject to harassment from individuals he describes as criminals. He expressed that this ongoing pressure and threats have impacted his mental well-being, contributing to his aggressive behavior during the event.

Sharma remarked, “The matter is that some people who call themselves criminals have harassed me several times, and they are harassing my family. My uncle’s son called me and said that they would kill me.” He acknowledged that the stress from these threats led to his outburst, for which he has apologized. Additionally, he confirmed that he has responded to the notice from the Women’s Commission.

The complainant, Pranchal Nauni, stated that Sharma’s remarks were offensive and hurt the feelings of students and attendees at the event. In response to the allegations, the police have registered a case under FIR No. 63/2026, citing multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including those related to obscene acts and insults meant to provoke a breach of peace.

The Dehradun Police have confirmed the filing of the FIR and indicated that legal proceedings will follow a thorough investigation. As of now, there has been no further comment from Sharma or his representatives regarding the matter.

Masoom Sharma is well-known for his contributions to Haryanvi music, often blending traditional folk elements with contemporary desi pop. His popularity surged with hit songs such as “2 Numbari” and “Madam Ji,” which have resonated with audiences in the region.
