Manish Ojha’s journey as a cricket coach in Bihar has been marked by challenges and triumphs while nurturing young talents like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Representing his home state in the prestigious Ranji Trophy, Ojha draws from his own experience to guide aspiring cricketers from one of India’s most disadvantaged regions.
Bihar is often recognized for its emphasis on academic achievement over sports, as many families prioritize education over athletic pursuits. This cultural backdrop adds a unique layer of significance to Ojha’s work at the Gen-Next Cricket Academy in Patna, where he trains young hopefuls. While some parents view cricket training as a mere hobby, others, like Sanjeev Sooryavanshi, are determined to see their children excel in the sport.
Sanjeev’s commitment to his son Vaibhav’s cricketing dreams sets a remarkable example. Ojha recalls how Sanjeev’s singular focus on his son’s development made a lasting impression. “His father’s only dream was to see Vaibhav play cricket at the highest level. He was obsessed with his son’s cricket,” Ojha recounted.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has recently captured the attention of cricket fans worldwide, particularly during his performances with the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). At just 15 years old, he exhibits incredible skill and determination, showcasing both talent and hard work. The grit of this father-son duo resonates with many, highlighting their commitment to the sport.
Traveling nearly 100 kilometers by train every other day became a norm for Vaibhav and his father as they dedicated hours to practice at the academy. The lack of proper facilities and coaching in Samastipur compelled Sanjeev to seek better opportunities for his son in Patna. Ojha reminisces about Sanjeev’s relentless pursuit of success, even recalling a remarkable 100-kilometer cycle ride to register Vaibhav for a tournament.
Despite his own aspirations being curtailed by limited support in his youth, Sanjeev’s sacrifices for Vaibhav have been profound, including selling farmland to finance his son’s cricket career. Ojha notes, “He has put everything at stake for the sake of his son’s cricket career.”
As Odha observes Vaibhav’s rise in the cricketing world, he feels a sense of pride in his progress. He confidently identifies Vaibhav as ready for international cricket, citing the young batter’s performance against top bowlers. Ojha emphasizes that while the game has improved, Vaibhav’s character remains unchanged, reflecting the humility he had when he first joined the academy.
Vaibhav’s style of play has sparked intrigue among cricket analysts, with discussions surrounding his age gaining traction. Ojha dismisses these doubts by referencing the stringent medical tests conducted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to verify player ages. He clarifies that Vaibhav’s 2019 bone test indicated only a slight variance from official records, reinforcing the legitimacy of the young player’s age.
In the ongoing IPL season, Vaibhav’s statistics speak volumes, boasting 246 runs from six matches with an impressive strike rate exceeding 236.59. Notably, his explosive hundred in 35 balls against Gujarat Titans has drawn widespread acclaim, and he continues to challenge elite bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult.
Veteran cricketers have acknowledged Vaibhav’s remarkable talent, yet Ojha insists that the young talent understands the importance of hard work. He highlights that Vaibhav’s role models are Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar, both of whom symbolize excellence in cricket. This admiration for such iconic figures instills a focus on his goals and keeps him grounded.
As Ojha continues to mentor Vaibhav and other young cricketers, their stories of commitment within the context of Bihar’s socio-economic landscape serve as an inspiring testament to what can be achieved through hard work and dedication.
