The number of fatalities from a blaze that erupted early Sunday morning in a high-rise building located in Sharjah’s Al Nahda area has climbed to five. Among the deceased are four yet-to-be-identified individuals who reportedly fell while trying to escape the inferno. Additionally, a Pakistani man in his forties suffered a fatal cardiac arrest, likely provoked by the stress of the situation.
The fire broke out on the 44th floor of the residential tower, resulting in six others sustaining serious injuries, with one resident experiencing smoke inhalation. Those injured are currently receiving care at Al Qassimi Hospital, where their conditions are said to be stable.
Emergency teams responded quickly, but tragically, four individuals lost their lives after falling from the building during their attempt to flee. Their bodies were found completely charred. Authorities confirmed that the Pakistani man did not have any burn injuries but succumbed to the trauma of the event.
The Sharjah Civil Defence reported that the incident was logged at 11:30 AM. Firefighting crews from various stations arrived promptly, helping evacuate residents while working to bring the fire under control.
By 7 PM, cooling efforts were concluded, and the site was turned over to law enforcement for further examination. The exact origin of the fire is still undetermined, prompting an investigation to uncover the facts.
Heavy smoke was observed pouring from the building, and officials cordoned off the vicinity to ensure the safety of the public.
When reporters visited the location on Sunday, evacuated residents were waiting for clearance to return. Some were seen outside, hoping to receive approval from authorities to go back to their homes.
Later that evening, residents were gradually allowed back into their apartments, but access to levels above the 30th floor remains restricted until thorough safety inspections can be completed.
Authorities indicated that temporary housing will be arranged for families who are unable to return home. Further information is expected once the area is fully secured and investigators are able to assess the situation.
Witnesses reported that the fire started on the upper two floors of the tower, which is one of the tallest structures in the emirate and is situated directly across from Sahara Centre.
“We could see officials responding quickly and handling the evacuation. Tenants were waiting in local cafes and restaurants to return to their residences, which appeared unharmed. I hope they are allowed back soon,” stated a café owner situated a block away from the affected building.
A shopkeeper mentioned that the tower accommodates numerous families.
Traffic disruptions are still in effect around the building to support emergency response operations and ensure public safety.
In a related incident, another fire was reported the same day at a fruit and vegetable warehouse in Sharjah’s industrial area 15, which was brought under control, according to the emirate’s civil defense authority.
