More parents are opting to keep their children in the UAE for education rather than sending them abroad. During a recent event, an expert noted that only 20-30 percent of attendees expressed interest in overseas studies.
Vera Hubner, the chief marketing officer of the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, highlighted that most inquiries at their booth revolved around whether they were based in Dubai. “When we confirmed we were not, only a small fraction showed enthusiasm for studying overseas,” she remarked.
She pointed out that many parents are reluctant to send their children away, citing concerns over visas and safety. “Many parents prefer to keep their children nearby and are apprehensive about long-distance travel,” she stated. “Visa availability is another significant concern.”
The institution is considering establishing a campus in Dubai to address this issue. “This could serve as an ideal location for us, particularly for families from the Indian subcontinent who may feel more secure sending their children to Dubai due to its proximity,” she added.
American Kean University, based in New Jersey, is also planning to open a local branch. “We are looking for partnerships here to facilitate our expansion,” explained T. Itunu Balogun, Vice President of Innovation and Engagement. “Many students hesitate to leave their families for the US, and we believe a local campus would be beneficial for them.”
Some parents shared their apprehensions regarding overseas education. Kavita M., a parent at the event, mentioned her 16-year-old son’s interest in computer engineering in the US, but she felt uncertain about this path.
“We have considered several American universities, but with the current political climate, I’m hesitant about sending him there,” she expressed. “We also explored European universities, but with worries about economic downturns and job shortages, I am questioning that option as well. I attended this event to discover more about local universities in the UAE, and I was pleasantly surprised to find numerous foreign institutions offering excellent education. Now, we have a lot to contemplate.”
Growing Interest
Ketevan Karbaia, director of the International Relations Department at Caucasus University, reported a notable interest from parents in their medical programs in Georgia.
<p“Georgia has recently gained popularity among students pursuing medical studies,” she noted. “We also offer a double degree program in collaboration with universities in the US and UK, allowing students to transition to these countries.”
The university collaborates with Ceeco Education Support Services in the UAE to assist students with enrollment, visa applications, and educational guidance.
