Dubai Marks Milestone with City’s First Liver Transplant for 13-Month-Old Baby

A 13-month-old baby has successfully received a liver transplant, marking the first instance of such a procedure in the city, conducted at King’s College Hospital London in Dubai, with assistance from the Al Jalila Foundation.

Malek was born with biliary atresia, a rare condition that led to a decline in his health despite a previous operation that aimed to connect his liver to his intestines. Additionally, he had a congenital heart issue known as an atrial septal defect.

After undergoing heart repair surgery, Malek was referred to King’s College Hospital in Dubai by Al Jalila Children’s Hospital, following a liver donation from his father.

The intricate surgery was performed by Professor Mohamed Rela, a leading figure in liver transplantation, and a skilled team at King’s College Hospital London in Dubai.

Al Jalila Children’s Hospital provided both specialized medical treatment for Malek and care for his father, including cardiac surgery to correct the heart defect. The Al Jalila Foundation financed the entire medical expenses for Malek, which encompassed thorough pre- and post-operative care at Al Jalila Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Younis Kazim, Acting CEO of the Health Regulation Sector at the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), remarked, “This successful liver transplant for a 13-month-old infant is a groundbreaking medical milestone for Dubai. It showcases the capability of the healthcare system to manage highly complex cases effectively and with professionalism, within a supportive environment that promotes excellence and encourages significant healthcare investments.”
