Dubai: Unreported Lithium Batteries Present Growing Danger to Aircraft and Lives, Iata Cautions

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has urged for the cessation of irresponsible shipping practices, as numerous shipments of lithium batteries are either undeclared or inaccurately declared, posing significant risks to aircraft and lives.

“Regulatory authorities in civil aviation need to impose strict penalties on non-compliant shippers. Furthermore, we require government support for the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to ensure the safe transport of hazardous materials by air,” stated Brendan Sullivan, IATA’s global head of cargo, during the 18th World Cargo Symposium in Dubai.

“The volume of lithium battery shipments is on the rise. With an increasing number of individuals utilizing devices that rely on lithium batteries, from smartphones and cameras to larger batteries in tools, e-bikes, and drones, the potential for incidents will escalate unless we enhance our diligence. Therefore, our commitment to safety must be heightened,” added Sullivan.

Millions of lithium batteries are transported by both cargo and passenger planes worldwide, primarily due to their widespread application in various electronic devices and sports equipment.

IATA has introduced guidelines aimed at aiding airlines and supply chain participants in addressing the hazards posed by these volatile items, a measure that has received broad industry approval.

“We call on nations to fulfill their responsibilities by sharing fundamental threat information so that airlines can evaluate risks and respond appropriately.”

As an illustration, he recounted an incident during a standard inspection at a cargo facility in East Asia. The air waybill described “mobile phone accessories,” which is typically unremarkable. However, one package raised the inspector’s concern because it contained damaged lithium batteries that had not been declared. The inspector’s timely intervention averted a significant safety threat just moments before loading onto an aircraft.

Sullivan credited the effective training received by the inspector, which played a crucial role in preventing a potential calamity.

Emphasizing the vital function of global air cargo, he noted that on an average day, 180,000 tonnes of goods are transported by air. “This is essential for global trade, fueling growth, generating employment, and fostering prosperity.”
