Worldwide Electric Car Sales Surge by 29% in March, According to Researchers

Worldwide sales of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles experienced a 29% increase year-on-year in March, driven by growth in both China and Europe. However, North America’s expansion was hindered by U.S. President Donald Trump’s approach to emissions regulations and uncertainties surrounding tariffs, according to data released on Tuesday.

The imposition of tariffs on imported vehicles in the U.S. could compel local manufacturers that operate in Mexico to adjust their pricing strategies or shift their production locations, stated Charles Lester, data manager at Rho Motion. Approximately 39% of electric vehicles sold in the U.S. are imported, while around 25% of domestically produced electric vehicles utilize batteries sourced from overseas, he noted.

Additionally, the tariffs imposed by China could have significant implications for Tesla’s models produced in the U.S., potentially resulting in nearly a doubling of the prices for the Model S and Model X sold in the Chinese market, according to Lester.

This latest increase aligns with the trends observed in previous months, contributing to a 29% surge in sales for the first quarter of the year.

Significance of the Situation

The U.S. began enforcing a 25% tariff on foreign vehicle imports starting April 3, a measure that President Trump claims will enhance domestic manufacturing and create jobs.

Analysts have cautioned that these tariffs could disrupt global supply chains, leading to increased prices and decreased sales within the U.S. market.

With the threat of trade disruptions, the European Union recently decided to explore the possibility of relaxing tariffs on electric vehicles produced in China, aiming to establish minimum price levels for these vehicles instead.

Key Statistics

According to Rho Motion, global sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) reached 1.7 million units in March. In China, sales surged by 36% compared to the same month in 2024, nearing 1 million vehicles.

Europe also recorded a 24% year-on-year rise in registrations, selling 0.4 million cars, as emission regulations and goals spurred the demand for BEVs in major markets like Germany, Italy, and the UK, as noted by Lester.

In North America, including the U.S. and Canada, electric vehicle sales climbed by 12%, totaling 0.2 million in March.

Sales in other regions of the world increased by 13% during the same month.

Lester remarked that the potential easing of the EU’s 2025 CO2 emissions standards would “certainly provide manufacturers in Europe with some relief,” adding that “a considerable portion of investment and scheduled model launches remain intact, which aids automakers financially.”

Globally, governments are implementing policies to promote the adoption of electric vehicles, although rising trade conflicts and sluggish automotive markets could lead to factory closures and significant job losses.

To combat a potential slowdown in electric vehicle sales and stimulate economic growth, China has extended its auto trade-in subsidies until 2025, as part of an expanded consumer trade-in initiative that began in January.
