There is no odor or vibration, and they will be very practical once convenient charging stations are established.” He saw it as a sophisticated, silent alternative to traditional internal combustion engines.
Fast forward over a century, Rolls-Royce has unveiled its initial electric vehicle (EV), the Spectre, making a long-awaited dream a reality. I had the privilege of testing the 5.5-meter-long, battery-operated super coupé to evaluate its aesthetics and performance. Here are my key impressions:
DESIGN & AESTHETICS
The Spectre is a stunning, metallic tribute that seamlessly combines regal architecture with yacht-inspired elements. Its bold geometric structure in a sleek two-door layout commands attention. The elongated bonnet gently slopes from the elegantly lit Pantheon grille, leading into a sporty fastback roofline, making it the most aerodynamically efficient Rolls-Royce to date. Both the optimally designed grille and the iconic Spirit of Ecstasy figurine, which angles into the wind, support this aerodynamic feat. The front is accented with streamlined LED headlights, while vertical LED taillights grace the rear. The flawless finish on the large body panels, and the upright wheel centers on the 23-inch wheels that remain vertical even in motion, deserve commendation.
Whether viewed up close or in the rearview mirror, the Spectre undeniably exudes an air of prestige. Sitting in it encourages a demeanor of grace, at least until a reckless driver cuts into your lane.
Opening the rear-hinged doors reveals the most luxurious interior in the automotive sector. The door closes automatically upon pressing the brake. Inside, you are enveloped in lavish materials and unique details—some familiar, others inventive. The substantial steering wheel has an analogue feel reminiscent of a yacht, yet features a fully digital gauge cluster with sleek monochromatic visuals. The driver’s seat, adorned with contrasting upholstery, offers superior comfort, although taller individuals might seek additional thigh support.
At the centerpiece is a 12.3-inch infotainment display sourced from BMW. While it’s slightly outdated, its size effectively avoids any technological garishness. Nearby, the textured open-pore wooden trims and genuine metal controls for the A/C add to the tactile luxury. The luxurious lambswool floor mats invite you to touch them like Maximus does in the movie Gladiator. An extraordinary feature is the Starlight headliner, which boasts shooting star effects and now extends to the doors, integrating 4,796 softly illuminated ‘stars’.
The power-retractable front seats fold away efficiently, but entering the rear seats can be cumbersome. Once settled, passengers are treated to an ambiance like that of family—a true VIP experience.
Moreover, the Spectre provides extensive customization options, allowing owners to personalize it as they desire—pun intended.
POWERTRAIN & PERFORMANCE
Underneath, the Spectre is powered not by a V12 engine, but by a 102.0-kWh lithium-ion battery. This battery operates a dual-motor configuration that generates an impressive total output of 584 PS. To start driving, simply pull a charming stalk located behind the steering wheel, and as it accelerates, you will experience the quietest ride imaginable. The absence of an internal combustion engine reduces cabin noise to an almost magical hush. The Spectre’s planar suspension ensures a smooth ride, allowing you to comfortably sign documents if the need arises! Additionally, the absence of B-pillars eliminates bothersome blind spots, and the pleasant turning signal chime enhances the driving experience.
While you can swiftly navigate with that substantial 900 Nm of torque, those who have already achieved wealth might prefer a more relaxed pace. Indeed, like all Rolls-Royce vehicles, the Spectre shines when enjoyed at a leisurely speed. With a shorter, stiffer chassis, it is capable of taking sharp turns and lane changes with reasonable agility, although such a grand vehicle deserves more grace than speed. Despite its weight, the powerful brakes efficiently manage deceleration. There’s also a Brake Mode that amplifies regenerative braking, enabling single-pedal driving.
At a 75% charge, it indicated a range of 346 km, hinting at a total capacity of approximately 460 km, which closely aligns with the claimed 530 km. For longer journeys, opulent owners might consider hiring a helicopter. Charging from 10% to 80% takes a mere 34 minutes utilizing a 195 kW DC charger, though the anticipated wireless induction charging feature is yet to arrive.
FEATURES & FUNCTIONALITY
Despite being a coupé, it offers ample trunk space capable of accommodating one or two suitcases. However, unlike many EVs, there is no front trunk.
Inside, you will discover two console compartments equipped with USB-C ports along with Bluetooth connectivity options. Additionally, Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke audio system delivers remarkable sound quality through metallic speaker grilles.
In terms of safety, the Spectre is equipped with features like Active Lane Centring, Adaptive Cruise Control, and more. There’s even a concealed umbrella in the door for unexpected rainy weather.
VERDICT
With the magnificent Spectre, Rolls-Royce makes a formidable entrance into the world of electric vehicles. As one of the most prestigious brands, it represents more than just a mode of transport—it’s a symbol of opulence and a bridge to the social elite. The Spectre is a remarkable machine with its grand dimensions, yacht-inspired design, luxuriously appointed interior, and captivating features. While it can accelerate impressively, it is best appreciated at a leisurely pace, amplified by its tranquil interior. Regardless of personal sentiment, the characteristics of an electric vehicle enhance the distinguished Rolls-Royce experience.
