Warren Buffett

Warren Edward Buffett, born on August 30, 1930, in Omaha, Nebraska, is widely regarded as one of the most successful investors in history. With a net worth of $101.1 billion as of October 2021, Buffett ranks among the top ten wealthiest individuals in the world. Known by the nicknames “Oracle of Omaha” and “Sage of Omaha”, he is the chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, a multinational conglomerate he transformed into one of the most respected investment firms globally.

A Life in Business and Investment

Buffett began investing at a young age and quickly developed a reputation for his extraordinary financial instincts and long-term thinking. He founded Berkshire Hathaway, which became his primary investment vehicle and is today a symbol of disciplined capital management. As the company’s largest shareholder and chief executive, Buffett has steered it through decades of growth, acquiring a vast portfolio of businesses across industries.

In contrast to most corporate leaders, Buffett has always maintained a modest lifestyle. His annual salary remains just $100,000, and he still lives in the Omaha house he purchased in 1958 for $31,500—now worth around $700,000. He also owns a home in Laguna Beach, California.

A Historic Philanthropic Pledge

In 2006, Buffett announced one of the largest charitable contributions in history: a commitment to donate 10 million Berkshire Hathaway Class B shares to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, valued at approximately $31 billion at the time. The foundation has been receiving 5% of this pledge each year since, marking an unprecedented act of philanthropy.

Buffett’s total donations make him one of the world’s most generous philanthropists. His commitment to the Giving Pledge, which he co-founded with Bill and Melinda Gates, encourages billionaires to give away the majority of their wealth during their lifetime.

The $1 Million Bet That Proved a Point

Buffett’s most famous wager in the financial world came in 2007, when he bet $1 million that the S&P 500 index would outperform a selection of hedge funds over the course of 10 years. The results, concluded in 2017, vindicated his faith in low-cost, passive investing:

  • The S&P 500 returned 7.1% annually
  • The hedge funds, selected by Protégé Partners, achieved just 2.1%

Initially invested in zero-coupon Treasury bonds, the bet’s funds were later converted to Berkshire Hathaway stock. By 2018, those shares were worth $2.2 million—double the original estimate.

The wager underlined Buffett’s criticism of hedge funds, which often charge high fees while delivering subpar returns. It also reinforced his belief in passive investment strategies such as ETFs and index funds, which have since gained widespread popularity.

Wisdom, Humor, and Influence

Despite his immense fortune and influence, Buffett is known for his humility, dry wit, and preference for simplicity. One of his most quoted jokes captures this perfectly:

“I buy expensive suits. They just look cheap on me.”

In 2007, Forbes listed Buffett among the 100 most influential people in the world, further cementing his status as a financial icon and moral compass in a turbulent industry.

Investment Without End

Buffett views Berkshire Hathaway as a game with no finish line. He once said,

“There is no finish line at Berkshire.”

That long-term mindset defines his investment strategy. He avoids the pressure of quarterly earnings or short-term profit, focusing instead on sound fundamentals, value, and the compounding power of time.

Even at the beginning of his career, Buffett was willing to work for free just to learn from the best.

“When I went to work for Ben Graham, I told him I’d work for nothing,” he recalled.

Legacy

Warren Buffett has redefined what it means to be a successful investor—not just through wealth accumulation, but through ethical leadership, generosity, and strategic patience. From his humble roots in Omaha to building one of the largest investment empires on the planet, his story continues to inspire generations of investors, business leaders, and philanthropists alike.

As Buffett famously teaches, it’s not about getting rich quick—it’s about getting rich right.
