Dubai Aims for Every Future Digital Enterprise to Prioritize AI, Says UAE Minister

Dubai is striving to position itself as a leading hub for business-oriented artificial intelligence, with the aspiration that all future digital enterprises will be AI-centric, as noted by a UAE official. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the emirate’s reputation as a pioneer in AI implementation.

During the opening of Dubai AI week, Omar Sultan AlOlama, the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, highlighted several goals aimed at advancing AI utilization over the coming year, including the collaboration between government entities and the private sector.

“Dubai is well-versed in both business and artificial intelligence,” he stated. “We recognize our capability to collaborate with top talents to ensure that Dubai becomes the hub for artificial intelligence deployment and the subsequent benefits.”

Building a Talent Pool

AlOlama emphasized Dubai’s dedication to cultivating a skilled workforce. “Our aim is to become a center that fosters exceptional talent, develops their skills, and ideally shares their innovations with the global community,” he remarked. To achieve this, Dubai plans to enhance educational investments and provide educators with the necessary resources to facilitate student learning. Last year, more than 10,000 students benefited from the launch of AI week in educational institutions.

He also mentioned that in the next year, each government organization will be evaluated and ranked based on how effectively AI is incorporated into its operations and the competencies of its personnel.

“This does not imply that we will utilize artificial intelligence merely for its own sake,” he clarified. “Our objective is to ensure that the application and use of AI genuinely enhance the quality of life for citizens in the UAE, particularly in Dubai.”

The AI week commenced on Monday at the Museum of the Future and Emirates Towers, featuring various activities such as the AI Retreat, Global Prompt Engineering Championship, Dubai AI Festival, and the Machines Can See conference. The event aims to unite global experts, decision-makers, and innovators from leading AI-focused organizations and institutions in the emirate.

Progress and Achievements

In the past year, over AED 20.6 billion has been invested in Dubai to bolster AI capabilities. More than 26 initiatives have been launched throughout the emirate to fulfill the Dubai Universal Blueprint for Artificial Intelligence, which was unveiled in April 2024.

Dubai is on course to meet its objective of appointing a chief AI officer for every government department by May of this year, with over 230 individuals already appointed. Additionally, last year, Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum initiated the world’s first and largest prompt engineering training program, aimed at enhancing the skills of one million individuals in this field over the next three years.

AlOlama reported that more than 325 businesses have applied for the AI seal since the campaign’s launch in January of this year. He explained that the seal “helps accurately categorize companies that excel in artificial intelligence and those that are reusing certain open-source models currently available.”
