Abu Dhabi International Book Fair Introduces New Programs and Areas to Enrich Visitor Experience

The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, organized by the Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language, has launched a series of innovative initiatives under the theme “Knowledge Society… Society of Knowledge.” These initiatives will be presented for the first time during its 34th edition, which runs from April 26 to May 5 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.

These new initiatives align with the Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language’s vision to foster innovation in the cultural sector, create a supportive environment for content creation, and expand regional and international collaborations within the publishing and knowledge fields. This aligns with Abu Dhabi’s ambition to boost the creative economy as a fundamental pillar of sustainable development, reinforcing its position as a global hub for cultural and intellectual production.

This year’s fair will feature the launch of over eight cultural and artistic interactive venues, alongside more than 2,000 activities tailored for a diverse audience impacting various age groups and interests. Subjects covered include literature, science, arts, technology, and digital content production.

The current edition of the fair will witness an exceptional cultural presence with over 1,400 exhibitors from 96 countries, showcasing more than 60 languages. This highlights the fair’s role as a meeting point for cultural dialogue and a resource for the publishing industry, facilitating the exchange of expertise between major publishing houses and content creators from around the globe.

First-time Participating Countries

This year, 20 countries are participating for the first time directly in the fair from four different continents, together speaking over 25 languages. This reflects the growing interest of international communities in the fair as a gateway to Arab culture and a platform for expanding into its markets.

The list of participating countries includes: Mexico, Lithuania, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, the Czech Republic, Brazil, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Armenia, Albania, Mongolia, North Macedonia, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Kosovo, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan.

The significance of this participation transcends geographical boundaries, illustrating new publishers’ aspirations to expand into Arab markets and seize the professional and cultural opportunities presented by the fair, especially with the presence of 25 literary agents from 13 countries and 28 international pavilions featuring publishing organizations from various parts of the world, thus enhancing partnerships and experience sharing in this sector.

Digital Gateways

This year’s fair has introduced a smart digital entry experience through electronic gates that utilize UAE identity scanning, along with the option for advance registration and issuing digital entry tickets. This provides a faster and smoother experience, emphasizing the fair’s commitment to innovation in cultural arenas, in line with the UAE’s vision for digital transformation and enhancing access to knowledge.

Among the new programs and venues is “Al-Mutanabbi Street,” which captures the essence of the renowned Baghdad street, featuring a design that reflects its unique atmosphere. Publishers from Iraq will present rare and historical books, honoring the memory of Iraqi culture and its esteemed place in the world of literature. The “Poetry Nights Council” is another new addition to the fair, hosting unique evenings that bring Arab poets together with their counterparts from different cultures for poetic dialogues that reflect cultural creativity.

“Under the Ghaf Tree” is another noteworthy venue that serves as a literary council beneath the shade of the ghaf tree, offering attendees a unique literary experience with an author who reads excerpts from their works, interacts with the audience, and signs copies of their books, turning moments into lasting memories.

“Dishes and Cultures”

The fair also features the “Dishes and Cultures” section, which provides cross-cultural content connecting culinary arts and literature, drawing on recipes inspired by the “Kalima Project” publications to document the relationship between culinary heritage and literary texts.

In a bid to empower youth, this edition introduces the “Young Moderators” initiative, granting young people the chance to lead discussions during sessions at the fair, helping them develop their debate and opinion-expression skills while providing direct interaction opportunities with writers, authors, and prominent figures from various fields.

The “On the Path of Knowledge” initiative adds significant value to the academic content, as it takes prominent speakers on a knowledge tour to several UAE universities, where they engage in interactive lectures covering literature, culture, innovation, and publishing, allowing students the chance for direct encounters with intellectual icons, enhancing knowledge exchange and linking academic circles with the literary and cultural scenes.

Likewise, the “Publishing Industry Pioneers” initiative will honor outstanding Arab publishers at the fair, recognizing their remarkable contributions to the publishing sector and support for Arab culture.

Given the rapid digital transformation, the fair will host the “Creativity Digitization Conference,” which presents a comprehensive view of the impact of digitization on rethinking arts and creative activities, discussing how creativity transcends traditional boundaries and opens new avenues for artists, writers, and publishers to express themselves and reach diverse audiences in the digital space.

This year’s edition also marks the launch of the first phase of the “Community Campaign for Sustainable Reading Support,” which aims to stimulate reading behavior among all demographics and establish daily reading habits as part of community life.

Together, these initiatives and venues underscore the significance of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair on the cultural events landscape and its role in enhancing the publishing industry globally. They also reaffirm the Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language’s commitment to supporting the sustainability of the cultural scene and fostering an environment conducive to creativity, aligning with the “Year of Community,” and reflecting the priorities of the UAE’s vision to empower human capital and enhance knowledge production.
