A team of researchers is currently engaged in an ambitious project aimed at creating the world’s first leather derived from the DNA of the Tyrannosaurus rex. According to reports, this initiative seeks to transform remnants from prehistoric times into luxurious and sustainable materials suitable for the fashion industry and automotive accessories.
Utilizing advanced techniques in genetic engineering and tissue engineering, the researchers aim to reconstruct the collagen sequence unique to the famed T. rex. This endeavor is based on collagen fragments discovered within fossils uncovered in 1988 in Montana, which represent one of the most complete fossil finds to date.
The collagen sequence will be artificially recreated and then integrated with cultured skin cells in the lab to generate a dense collagen network that forms the basis of the “luxurious and sustainable” leather. The leather is being developed in a laboratory in Newcastle through a collaborative effort among several companies.
