A recent study conducted by researchers from the University of Cambridge and Shanghai has revealed that teenagers who have a tendency to go to bed early and obtain adequate sleep exhibit superior cognitive and mental skills compared to those who stay up late.
This large-scale study, the most extensive of its kind focusing on brain development in adolescents, involved over 3,000 participants aged between 13 and 18 years. Their sleep patterns were monitored using specialized devices, and they underwent a series of cognitive tests and brain scans.
The results indicated that the group that typically retired early (approximately 37% of participants) demonstrated better academic and cognitive performance, excelling in reading tests, problem-solving tasks, and memory assessments. Moreover, brain scans showed that individuals in this group had larger brain sizes and more efficient neural functions.
On the other hand, the study highlighted that most teenagers do not achieve the recommended 8 to 10 hours of sleep daily, with the average sleep duration for the highest-performing group being about 7 hours and 25 minutes.
Professor Barbara Sahakian, one of the researchers involved in the study, explained that the brain engages in complex processes during sleep to organize memories and strengthen learned skills, which accounts for the strong correlation between sleep quality and cognitive abilities.
Researchers advised teenagers looking to enhance their cognitive performance to adopt several practices, including avoiding electronic devices before bedtime, engaging in regular physical activity, and maintaining a consistent sleep schedule even during weekends.
This study provides further evidence of the critical importance of sufficient sleep during adolescence, a period marked by crucial brain development.
