The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2025 featured a session titled “The Voice That Grew With Us: Ahlam’s Journey and Impact,” hosted by the cultural institution Bahar. It was led by Emirati writer Asma Sadik Al-Mutawa, where the artist Ahlam shared insights about her artistic, humanitarian, and cultural experiences, along with her career path.
Ahlam emphasized that preserving cultural and musical heritage requires innovation, which can be achieved by creating new works derived from tradition and reshaping them in contemporary styles. She stated, “Innovation is essential for the continuity of art, and it is what safeguards musical heritage across generations.”
During the session, Ahlam offered valuable advice for aspiring artists, drawing from her extensive experience. She remarked, “An artist should not remain static but should strive for growth while maintaining their artistic identity and embracing innovation. This formula fosters a loyal audience. Innovation and renewal can emerge from various artistic elements, such as new music, attention to musical arrangements, and adapting to modern trends, like shortening lengthy pieces and simplifying complex lyrics. These practices ensure that an artist can uphold their cultural identity while thriving through innovation.”
Ahlam surprised attendees at the Abu Dhabi Book Fair by performing several songs live, including a snippet from Umm Kulthum’s iconic piece “Sirat Al-Hob.” She also performed excerpts from her beloved classic songs, particularly those with national themes. She expressed her artistic philosophy, which revolves around constantly starting anew and strengthening herself through her works.
She further unveiled her artistic ambitions, noting her dream of establishing a “School of Ahlam.” Ahlam confirmed her passion for art, identifying herself as a lifelong lover of the craft.
