Humanitarian Response in Gaza is on the Brink of Complete Collapse

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has declared that humanitarian efforts in Gaza are on the verge of total collapse. Six weeks of intense conflict, coupled with a complete halt of aid deliveries for two months, have left civilians deprived of essential resources for survival.

In a statement released from Geneva on Friday, the ICRC warned that without an immediate resumption of aid, they would be unable to procure the food, medicine, and life-saving supplies necessary to continue their various programs in Gaza.

Pascal Hundt, the Deputy Director of Operations at the ICRC, mentioned that civilians in Gaza are grappling with daily struggles to survive amid the ongoing hostilities, displacement, and the lack of urgent humanitarian assistance. He emphasized that this situation cannot—and must not—be allowed to deteriorate further.

The committee highlighted that, under international humanitarian law, Israel is obligated to use all available means to meet the basic needs of the civilian population under its control. They noted that if the blockade continues, programs like their communal kitchens—often the only source of nourishment for many residents—will only operate for a few more weeks.

Additionally, the ICRC stated that their field hospital in Gaza is facing a severe shortage of food and medical supplies, with some essential medications and supplies already depleted.

It was pointed out that hospitals and other medical facilities are restructuring their inventories and prioritizing supplies to sustain their life-saving operations. However, without urgent replenishment of stocks, hospitals will struggle to provide the critical medical care needed by patients.

The ICRC reiterated its commitment to serving civilians in Gaza, but noted that the deteriorating security situation severely limits the operations and movement of its staff and partners. They emphasized that international humanitarian law is clear; medical personnel and facilities must be respected and protected under all circumstances, and all parties must ensure that hospitals remain safe havens to preserve human life.

The committee called for the delivery of aid to Gaza, the release of hostages, and the protection of civilians.

They warned that without immediate action, Gaza will descend into further chaos, which humanitarian efforts will be unable to alleviate.
