New Research Links Schizophrenia Risk to Genetic Factors and Retinal Thickness
A research team in Switzerland has discovered that genetic factors associated with an increased risk of schizophrenia may relate to a decrease in retinal thickness. This finding supports the idea that eye health and vision can be connected to the likelihood of mental changes in patients.
The research group from the University of Zurich and the University Hospital of Psychiatry in the Swiss capital highlighted that the retina is a part of the human nervous system and serves as a natural extension of the brain. Consequently, any alterations in the brain could potentially be reflected in the eyes.
The researchers utilized extensive data from retinal tests and genetic traits obtained from the UK Biobank, a database containing health information on over half a million individuals.
Their findings indicate a correlation between schizophrenia and reduced retinal thickness; however, they noted that this link is limited and can only be observed through extensive studies. The researchers emphasized that changes in the eyes can be easily monitored for early indicators of schizophrenia, unlike complex tests that must be conducted on the brain to identify early signs of the disorder.
According to the researchers, using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), a form of ultrasound imaging for the eye, allows for the measurement of retinal thickness in just a few minutes.
Additionally, the research revealed that various inflammations that may occur in the brain due to genetic factors could lead to changes in the retinal network, with some of these inflammations recognized as contributors to the worsening of schizophrenia.
In comments made to a scientific research website, lead researcher Finn Rabi from the University of Zurich stated, “If this hypothesis is validated, it may allow for medical interventions to treat these inflammations, thereby improving the treatment prospects for schizophrenia patients in the future,” highlighting the serious nature of this condition which distorts the patient’s perception of reality.
