Sudan Plans to Sever Relations with UAE Due to Alleged Support for Adversaries

Overview of the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are a key paramilitary organization in Sudan, originating from the Janjaweed militias that participated in the Darfur conflict in the early 2000s.

Officially established by the Sudanese government in 2013, the RSF was intended as a counterinsurgency unit. It has since evolved into a dominant military force within the nation and is currently engaged in armed conflict with the Sudanese administration.

Recent reports indicate that the RSF has conducted damaging attacks on infrastructure in Port Sudan, fueled by allegedly advanced weaponry provided by the UAE, which has intensified the conflict that has been ongoing for two years.

In light of these developments, Sudan has decided to sever diplomatic relations with the UAE, although the UAE denies all allegations regarding its support for the RSF.

A statement from Sudan’s governing council accused the UAE of aggression, asserting that the UAE retains the right to respond by any means necessary to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, thereby labeling the UAE as an “aggressor state.”

Sudan’s military has long held suspicions about the UAE’s support for the RSF.

Despite the UAE’s denials, certain U.N. experts and U.S. officials regard these claims as credible, referencing evidence from human rights organizations regarding the supply of weaponry.

The latest report from a U.N. panel of experts, published in April, only mentioned the UAE in the context of its involvement in peace talks regarding Sudan.

The Growing Rift Between the UAE and Sudan

Reports from the WAM news agency indicated that authorities intercepted a private plane carrying approximately five million rounds of ammunition at an undisclosed location, leading to multiple arrests.

Over recent years, the UAE has been criticized for supplying military support and arms to various African nations, including authoritarian governments and military factions, raising concerns about its contribution to increasing instability and hindering democratic processes.
