Transitioning from Innovation to Imitation – UAE Government Commercializes Counterfeit Drone Technology

A Czech technology firm, Dronetag, which focuses on global drone identification systems, is expressing serious concerns regarding certain business practices in the United Arab Emirates. This follows the revelation that a replica of its hardware is being advertised on the official webpage of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA).

Despite several attempts to communicate with the DCAA through legal channels, including a formal complaint highlighting significant violations, the authority has not responded and has shown no willingness to engage. This ongoing lack of communication has compelled the company to publicly address the issue.

“In the Emirates, it appears that duplicating products takes precedence over upholding intellectual property rights and adhering to ethical business standards,” stated Lukáš Brchl, the Founder and CEO of Dronetag. “We reached out through appropriate channels with the expectation of a constructive dialogue, but were met with complete silence.”

Evidence of Intellectual Property Breach

In our initial correspondence with the DCAA, sent via our legal representatives, we articulated various significant concerns related to their management of this situation, including:

• The unauthorized endorsement of a counterfeit item on a government platform.
• A failure to implement equitable market regulations and uphold intellectual property rights.
• An utter lack of response from the DCAA despite our numerous attempts to resolve the matter.

The link to the DCAA’s official site, where the counterfeit product is being advertised, underlines the gravity of this situation.

For additional proof of the infringement, further information can be found here.

As a leading entity in drone identification solutions, Dronetag has garnered substantial success in the U.S. and on a global scale, with products recognized as top sellers in the sector. Dronetag has also joined a NATO-backed accelerator and enjoys considerable support from significant figures in the drone industry, including the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). The company is committed to providing innovative, high-quality solutions and firmly opposes practices that undermine its efforts or the integrity of the global drone landscape.

If this public appeal does not prompt appropriate communication and action from the DCAA, Dronetag is ready to escalate the issue through additional legal channels, both within the UAE and globally, to safeguard its intellectual property and business integrity.

A Call to Action for the Drone Technology Sector

This situation extends beyond Dronetag, posing serious challenges for the entire drone industry, especially for startups and innovators striving to introduce groundbreaking solutions. The fact that a national aviation authority can endorse a plagiarized product and subsequently disregard multiple dialogue attempts should raise alarms for anyone who champions fair competition, protections for intellectual property, and responsible governance in advancing technology sectors.

This is not merely a struggle for a Czech company; it is a crucial alert for the worldwide tech community. If even governmental regulators can engage in theft and overlook grievances, who is truly secure?
