Due to War and Blockade, Gaza Has Turned into a Land of Despair

The unprecedented humanitarian crisis facing over two million Palestinians trapped in the Gaza Strip, compounded by Israel’s blockade on aid since early March, has turned the region into “a land of despair,” resulting in severe humanitarian costs for its residents.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) reported yesterday that Gaza is now characterized as “a territory of hopelessness.” In a social media post, the agency highlighted the “unprecedented level of hunger” and emphasized the urgent need to lift the blockade and allow the flow of supplies, calling for the “release of hostages and an immediate ceasefire.”

In Geneva, the International Committee of the Red Cross condemned the heavy humanitarian toll of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, denouncing Israel’s “complete and unacceptable” blockade on aid. ICRC Director-General Pierre Krähenbühl stated to reporters, “It is unacceptable to prevent humanitarian assistance from entering.”

He added that this situation “fundamentally contradicts everything laid out in international humanitarian law,” stressing that “the coming days will be critical.” Krähenbühl noted, “There will come a time when the remaining medical supplies and other aid will run out.”

He stated, “What is urgently required right now is an immediate return to a ceasefire to alleviate the tension and humanitarian pressure”, asserting that “the plight witnessed in Gaza is profoundly distressing, and the severe humanitarian cost of this conflict is simply intolerable.” He continued: “If these are the characteristics of future wars, we should all feel alarmed, and we must recognize that what is happening threatens the very core of our humanity.”

Dozens of charitable kitchens in the region, known as “Takiya,” halted operations yesterday due to a lack of supplies, cutting off a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of people.

This decision followed a statement from the World Central Kitchen, a U.S.-based charitable organization, indicating that it had run out of the necessary ingredients to provide the critically needed free meals and that Israel had barred them from delivering aid.

Amjad Al-Shawa, director of the Palestinian NGOs Network in Gaza, indicated that most of the 170 kitchens in the area closed after depleting their food stocks due to the ongoing Israeli blockade. He noted, “The announcement from World Central Kitchen late Wednesday and the subsequent closure of charitable kitchens will lead to a drop of 400,000 to 500,000 free meals a day for residents in the Strip.”

He remarked, “Everyone in Gaza is hungry; the world must act now to save lives.” He added, “The remaining community kitchens will also close soon, and people are losing their only source of food.” He expressed concern that in the coming days, there may be fatalities among the elderly, vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, and the sick. The Gaza Civil Defense has warned that it is on the brink of complete operational cessation due to the blockade. They commented, “We are facing a significant shortage of electricity generators and oxygen machines in Gaza.”
