Since the incorporation of Emirati women into military service, they have exemplified dedication and commitment in a grand mission to defend the homeland.
This initiative began early on, as the visionary leadership of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan opened the doors wide for women by launching the Khawla bint Al Azwar Military School in 1990. This led to a culture of volunteering among Emirati women, with the state progressively providing them with numerous opportunities in military roles.
Over the years, the rulers of the UAE have placed great importance on empowering Emirati women in military positions, believing that both sons and daughters of the nation must actively participate in the development journey.
This belief was reiterated by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, during his speech on the 49th anniversary of the unification of the armed forces. He addressed both “sons and daughters” of the armed forces equally, stating, “Today we commemorate a national occasion that holds a special place in our hearts and reflect on a significant milestone in our national achievements. For forty-nine years, our armed forces have stood as a robust fortress, ensuring the security of our homeland and all who reside on its soil.”
Early Graduates
With the graduation of the first cohorts from the Khawla bint Al Azwar Military School, the first military academy for women in the Gulf region, Emirati women embraced the challenge with determination. They excelled in their military duties and defended their nation’s interests, contributing to international peace efforts and humanitarian aid initiatives worldwide, consistent with the UAE’s commitment to global philanthropy.
In recognition of Emirati women’s contributions to military service, the state has provided unwavering support, allowing them to join the armed forces if they possess a high school diploma and meet medical fitness criteria. Once these conditions are met, they embark on their journey of service, standing as equal partners alongside men. This was noted by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, “Mother of the Nation,” President of the UAE General Women’s Union, who expressed her pride and appreciation, saying, “The unmatched success achieved by Emirati women in various fields has no limits. Just as they have partnered with men in all areas, it is now essential for them to defend this success and actively enlist in military service to protect their homeland that has provided them with everything.”
She added, “Emirati women have been involved in military work since early on and have played distinguished roles within the armed forces, proving their capabilities continually.”
Training Programs
Support from political leadership for women in the armed forces has gone beyond facilitating their entry; it has included investing in enhancing their military skills through participation in training programs with international organizations, especially peacekeeping missions.
The Arabic edition of “Vogue” highlighted the competence of Emirati women in military roles during its coverage of an international training program at the Khawla bint Al Azwar Military School, stating: “Dust and debris, nor the desert sands, can alter the demeanor of Emirati female officers. Despite wielding weapons and undergoing rigorous military training, they maintain a serene smile and exude confidence and determination.”
The initiative launched by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak to encourage women not only in the UAE but globally, to engage actively in international peace and security efforts signifies that Emirati women are at the forefront of global trends promoting women’s empowerment in critical military roles.
Achievements of Women
Emirati women’s accomplishments extend beyond field military roles, as they have also actively participated in military-related scientific research, achieving high-level positions like Mona Ahmed Al Jaber, Chairwoman of the UAE Defense Industries Council. She exemplifies the UAE’s commitment to supporting and advancing the contributions of its female citizens in the military sector.
In this context, Mona Al Jaber stated, “The journey of every Emirati woman, regardless of her position, is a testament to creativity, dedication, and innovation. Emirati women play a prominent role in raising the nation’s flag high across various fields, from security and defense to technology, innovation, and defense industries, as well as education, health, engineering, politics, and economics.”
She added, “We work together in cooperation and respect, encouraging each other to achieve our goals and make our mark in realizing the vision and objectives of the UAE and its leadership.”
Trust of Leadership
Following their success in gaining the trust of political leadership, the UAE armed forces have witnessed an increasing number of women joining, aiming to reach similar proportions as in the most advanced armies, estimated at about 10% of total personnel. This reflects the belief that the inclusion of women in the defense sector will directly contribute to solidifying the UAE’s leadership image and promoting its reputation as a shining example of women’s empowerment across all domains, including military positions where they now stand on the front lines, driven by hope for continued efforts in giving back to their generous homeland.
