The UAE Space Agency has received the Future Readiness Mark for its “Space Data Center” project, an accolade awarded to federal and local government entities that design and implement exceptional initiatives aimed at enhancing the UAE’s readiness for future challenges.
This recognition of the Space Data Center underscores its role as a transformative national project that supports the UAE government’s efforts to accelerate digital transformation and leverage space and artificial intelligence technologies for human benefit and sustainability.
The services provided by the center, developed in collaboration with Space 42, a leading UAE company in space technology, include:
- Access to space data
- Data analysis algorithms
- Artificial intelligence software
- A marketplace for space applications
Additionally, the center features 47 in-house developed AI models for analyzing space data, which include models for environmental change detection, vessel tracking, and crisis management, such as during floods and earthquakes.
Enhancing Readiness
The center has contributed to the development of an advanced digital infrastructure aimed at bolstering the readiness of the space sector, forming part of an innovative framework that is the first of its kind in the MENA region. This framework utilizes AI solutions and smart analytics, converting them into tools for real-time decision-making.
Supporting both national and international missions, the center benefits from a network of over 300 satellites monitoring Earth within a unified infrastructure.
Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of State for Entrepreneurship and Small and Medium Enterprises, emphasized that the Space Data Center project represents a pivotal element in the UAE’s journey, reflecting its ambitious vision to create an advanced digital infrastructure that facilitates data sharing and analysis, contributing to vital sectors across the nation and enhancing the space economy.
He pointed out that the center serves as a unique digital platform for collecting and providing space data for scientists, researchers, government and private institutions, startups, and community members.
Minister of State for Government Development and the Future, Ohood Al Roumi, highlighted that the UAE leadership is committed to fostering digital transformation and expediting the development and adoption of innovative technological solutions across various fields, enhancing sector readiness for the future and supporting state visions while promoting its competitiveness on the global stage.
She mentioned that the Space Data Center project reflects the UAE’s forward-looking vision and illustrates the significance of the space sector in its strategies centered around integrating space technology and artificial intelligence into operational models that serve humanity, society, and the environment.
The project stands as a global scientific and practical reference in utilizing space sciences to support national plans with smart indicators, enhancing sector resilience and expediting responses to future changes.
Success Stories
Since its launch in 2022, the Space Data Center has made a tangible impact, contributing to 30 success stories that have facilitated decision-making across various sectors both locally and internationally. Notably, it has improved response efforts for rescue teams during the earthquakes in Turkey and Morocco.
The center also developed the “Nabat” application, which has aided in enhancing food security by analyzing data from over 4,000 local farms using satellite data, supported studies on accurately tracking methane emissions to help achieve emission reduction targets, and developed an early warning system to protect coral reefs in the Maldives.
The Space Data Center plays a vital role in international efforts within the International Charter on Space and Major Disasters for crisis and disaster management, as the UAE is the sole member of this charter.
