Despite its relatively recent entry into the arena of space exploration, the UAE has achieved significant milestones in a short time frame, largely due to its partnerships with leading countries, primarily the United States.
This relationship has expanded beyond technological and scientific frameworks, evolving into a comprehensive model of international cooperation. It reflects a shared vision for outer space exploration and aims to develop new technologies that enhance human life and strengthen space security.
One of the most notable aspects of the UAE-US space collaboration is the UAE’s founding membership in the Artemis Accords, established in 2020 by NASA to promote a secure and transparent environment for lunar exploration and beyond. The UAE’s selection for this role stems from its ambitious peaceful program and advanced legislative framework that fosters innovation and growth in the space sector.
The exploration activities and scientific initiatives are designed to benefit humanity as a whole. NASA has indicated that the UAE was chosen as one of the first countries to join this international agreement due to its promising and ambitious peaceful space exploration program.
Thanks to its regional and international leadership in this critical field, as well as its transparent legal framework that addresses future challenges and inspires growth, the UAE is positioned as a vanguard in space.
Cooperation between the two nations has also extended to strategic projects, including the Mars Exploration Initiative, a human spaceflight program, and the UAE’s project to explore the asteroid belt, which is the first of its kind globally, aimed at studying seven asteroids in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter.
The asteroid mission will span 13 years, with 6 years dedicated to designing and developing the MBR Explorer spacecraft and 7 years for asteroid exploration and gathering unprecedented scientific data about their composition and origins. This research will pave the way for a deeper understanding of the solar system’s formation, involving collaboration with six American partners from universities and research centers, notably the University of Arizona and the University of Colorado Boulder.
Knowledge Transfer
Another critical aspect of this partnership is focused on training programs and capacity building. Emirati astronauts have undergone training at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. In 2019, the first Emirati astronaut, Hazzaa AlMansoori, participated in a short mission to the International Space Station in collaboration with NASA.
Following that, His Excellency Dr. Sultan AlNeyadi, Minister of State for Youth Affairs, took part in NASA’s SpaceX Crew-6 mission in 2023, lasting six months, making him the first Arab astronaut to complete a long-duration mission in space and the first to conduct a spacewalk outside the International Space Station.
In the context of climate action, the UAE led a global commitment at the COP28 Climate Summit, engaging 20 space agencies, including the US, to support climate agendas through funding research and programs designed to combat climate change. The participating space agencies pledged to take “serious commitments” to accelerate climate action through funding climate initiatives and enhancing climate research.
Space Economy
The UAE places substantial strategic importance on the space sector as a driver for economic diversification, viewing it as a catalyst for the growth of the space industries and startups. Meanwhile, the United States aims to strengthen partnerships with nations that have ambitious visions. This reciprocal relationship has opened new avenues for investment in innovative and advanced technological fields.
Space Race
In December 2023, the UAE officially joined the Lunar Gateway program alongside the United States, Japan, Canada, and the European Union, becoming the first Arab nation involved in this monumental project, which aims to construct a space station in lunar orbit in preparation for future human missions.
In this project, the UAE is responsible for developing a 10-ton pressure equivalent module and establishing a space operations center within the country, along with a global astronaut training center. An agreement has been signed with Thales Alenia Space as a partner in the development of this module, bolstering the UAE’s capabilities in designing and building advanced space systems.
The UAE-US collaboration in space extends beyond exploration missions to encompass scientific research as well. The Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre has formed research partnerships with prestigious American universities, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as part of the Undergraduate Space Science Research Program 2025, aimed at preparing a new generation of Emirati talents in space science and engineering fields.
