The Trump administration has announced plans to impose sanctions on Sudan following confirmation of the use of chemical weapons during the civil war in 2024, in violation of international treaties.
On Thursday, the U.S. State Department declared that these sanctions will take effect next month and will include restrictions on American exports to Sudan as well as limitations on access to U.S. government credit lines.
The statement emphasized, “The United States urges the Sudanese government to cease the use of chemical weapons and to uphold its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention.” It further reiterated the U.S. commitment to holding accountable those responsible for the proliferation of chemical weapons.
The State Department has informed Congress about this decision, and lawmakers will have 15 days to review it. If there are no objections, the sanctions are expected to be implemented by June 6 or shortly thereafter.
