Modi Threatens to Cut Pakistan Off from Shared Rivers

New Tensions Emerge Between India and Pakistan Despite Ceasefire

Despite a ceasefire between the two nations, indications of a potential escalation are surfacing between India and Pakistan. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced yesterday that India would not permit Pakistan to access river waters that it has rights to use. This move is viewed by analysts as a strategic leverage point, particularly given the significance of water issues in the ongoing disputes between the countries.

During a public event, Modi stressed that Pakistan would not receive water from the rivers that India controls. He warned, “Pakistan will pay a heavy price for every terrorist attack… The Pakistani military and economy will bear the consequences.”

This declaration comes a month after an attack in the Indian-administered region of Kashmir that resulted in fatalities, prompting New Delhi to suspend a key treaty involving the sharing of river waters between the two nations.

The suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, established with the mediation of the World Bank in 1960, was part of a set of measures India took against Pakistan in the aftermath of the attack on April 22, which claimed 26 lives, primarily among Indian tourists.

New Delhi has accused Pakistan of supporting the attack, a claim that Islamabad has denied. This conflict marked the most intense military skirmish between the two nuclear neighbors in nearly three decades until the ceasefire agreement was reached on May 10.
